no idea on your system, but have a g3 powerbook (pismo) that has not had a pram battery in it for about the last 7-8 years, and works just fine. i put a script to sync the clock in the startup folder, and i've never had a problem.

i think for what you're going to use it for, it will work fine. best of luck.

whats the risk if there isnt a backup?

You're not telling me that you don't have a backup, do you? ;)

    Risks involved?
Data loss, business disruption, loss of business.

Seriously, if that machine is a corporate server, back it up! Backups in enterprise environments are even more important than for private users.

not that anyone cares, but I (and some Apple employees) found the problems. Apparently Sandy Bridge machines HAVE THE EXACT same problem has I have. They loaded a TIFF file from my machine onto a floor model, same deal as I have. They loaded the same file onto a pre-SB machine, loads A-OK.

So they are sending in my logs to the software engineers to make them aware of it, as I am assuming this is the first case they have encountered. I am wondering if old NEF files (such as D2x etc) have the same problem?

In anycase, lets hope they can give me an answer in the next few days.

It's not me it's the dying man that makes the OS comparisons at every keynote. Well actually he only did when iOS was in a leading position...

The last Android vs. iOS comparison he made was something like: "We have 350k apps!". Well Android now has about 325k apps and grows by about 35k apps per month. I guess that comparison won't make it into his June keynote....

I imagine the millions of apps, and the fact that people actually buy apps on iOS (and almost not at all on Android) will be a large part of the keynote..

Go ahead an miss-quote the rovio ad revenue statement now, that is the next line on the list of Android talking points.

P.S. You are pretty classes, even for an Android fan.

Firstly, I am new to the forums and my first post and subsequent updates manageed to P!$$ off a lot of people so I hope I get this one right!

I am a convert from Windows to PC and as such still learning!

I have a mobile broadband dongle from T-Mobile (UK) which I have had for a number of years now and it has worked, consistently, extremely well on my windows based laptop. This was not the case when I plugged it in to my 13" MacBook Pro that I have just purchased as part of my conversion.

I concluded I must be doing something wrong.

The modem is a Huawei E220 and I have done all the firmware upgrades etc that all the other forums seem to suggest.

The last suggestion from T-Mobile was that I utilise a more up to date broadband dongle to install the latest connection manager software on to my MBP. I have done this.

I now have no error messages when I plug the dongle in to the MBP and I know the driver is OK etc because I do manage to connect and surf the web etc.

My issue is that after a short period of time (this can vary between 1min and 5mins) the Dongle appears to hang or freeze.

The light on the dongle remains blue but no data is transferring.

I have installed little snitch also which shows me the red outgoing data but no green incomming on the little display in the menu bar.

I have made assumptions that the driver, connection manager, firmware, little snitch or firewall etc are all ok because I am gettign a connection at some point for a short period of time.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar issues or can indeed assist me in the resolution?

I am wondering if it is a setting on the MBP because of the device failing after a period of time?

The OS id Snow Leopard and I believe I am up to date with my software releases.

    Any help gratefully received !

Performance wise, probably not a huge difference other than it will be able to handle your tasks well. A SSD in your current machine would probably make a more significant difference, as was mentioned before, but do you want to throw money at a 2 year old machine? If you plan on keeping the thing until it dies, definitely worth the investment. If you plan on selling the current one to help finace the new computer, I wouldn't throw a dime into it. Just bite the bullet now with the new machine. I'd sell as soon as you get the new machine (or just before you get it) so you can get the most money out of your current computer.

As for the high tea anti glare, I actually prefer movies on the glossy screen but that is of course subjective. I'd say spring for it if you can, for resale if nothing else. More likely to sell and/or get an extra 50 or 100 bucks out of the eventual sale of the machine. People love anti glare screens!

What kind of price range are you talking about here. I have a pretty freakin' loaded T61 14.1" for which I don't know the specs right off hand. I know it has dedicated nvidia graphics, 2GB Ram and 802.11N wireless plus a 7,200 RPM HDD (100GB I believe) and a Core 2 Duo processor. It is still in great shape and is still under warranty until I think Sept.

If you are going for 2TB drives, the WD Caviar Green drives are among the favorites. It's been reported they have some issues regarding the high load cycle counts (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=WD%20caviar%20green%20high%20load%20cycle%20count&cp=10&pq=wd%20green%20high%20load%20cycle%20count&pf=p&sclient=psy&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=WD+caviar+green+high+load+cycle+count&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=6cbe03e6833a46ef) due to the firmware...

    Related:
How to Stop Excessive Load Cycles on the Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green (WD20EARS) with WDIDLE3 (http://www.storagereview.com/how_stop_excessive_load_cycles_western_digital_2tb_caviar_green_wd20ears_wdidle3)

It's a bit of work, but the high load cycle counts due to excessive head parking can be prevented.

A long time ago I disassembled my powerbook cause it had a lot of problems, and I lost the cable that goes to the pram board/battery. THe battery is dead anyways.

I plan on using this machine as a simple "airport express"-esque itunes music player controlled by my ios device with Remote. display is bad, keyboard is bad, trackpad, etc. I will shed the os of anything unneccessary and optimize for shear itunes playback performance and that's it.

Anyways, can I ditch that pram battery board without any real issues?

My guess is it will fail to boot without a PRAM battery or may have startup issues. But I don't know for sure.

    Cheers

what would be the security problem?
No, you can turn it off normally. It's a security problem for some people to leave it on all the time.

Sorry I can't help with your problem though, but you should be able to turn it off.

"CHEAP GAS!" is fast becoming a firm favorite.

You can filter by cheapest gas price within your zip code or allow IPhone to detect your current location. Also filter by closest gas station.
Recently I had virtually run out of gas with just under 1 km worth of fuel showing. The app enabled me to determine where the closest gas station was and the price they were charging. Maps and directions to the nearest, or any gas station are given.
People who have downloaded this app maintain it and keep prices current by uploading whenever possible.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cheap-gas/id290765007?mt=8

5-0 Radio is another app that allows you to listen in to Police/Fire/ Emergency channels as well as Ham Radio stations around the world.

Just downloaded "HBO GO".You have to be a cable subscriber to HBO though.
Looking forward to watching The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm , etc on the IPhone when nothing better to do.

That site looks very cool. I was under the impression I could try it out on one page but when I click download it says I need to pay $12? If it work I'll be paying for sure...but I want to try it first..

Don't bother. The Google Chrome developer tools tell you which CSS rules are unused and that is free (in the Audits section if you are interested).

I don't mind having external brick, it fits nicely under my PowerMac. What I would want to see is longer cable between host and display!! I'd kill for a 5 meter cable.

Agree, brick not a problem at all, it still looks 10x better than most power adapters around my desk. More inputs, yes, bring them on, built in iSight - why not, but not critical (says a happy fellow who still has the original iSight).

    :-)

Why is it that the iPad and the iPhone have great Sync with the iMa, but the small drive MBA has no Sync. Both the MBA and the iPad can be 64GB. Since one cannot cram a 1 Terabyte drive into 64GB of the MBA, there is a need for the Sync.

So here was my experience today. Short version: not too shabby!

I arrived at Arrowhead Mall around 11:15 am, found my way to the back of the reservation line.

The line was roughly 3 mall storefronts long, went from the Apple Store, past Sephora and 2 other ladies clothing stores.

The walk-in line was barely moving, but the reservation line moved at a decent clip. I got to the front of the line by around 12:30. Being lunch time, the Apple employees were handing out chocolate chip cookies from Paradise Bakery along with some water. They were also profusely thanking folks in line for toughing it out.

Got in the store at 12:35 pm, left about 10 minutes later at 12:45pm.

All told I was there 1h 30m, which wasn't too bad at all. And I got to sleep in and got a cookie. Sounds like this store was having a better time of it than most, and I feel fortunate it didn't take me too long.

One thing: they were completely out of bumpers. I was going to pick one up because of the reported "cupping" issues as I'm a lefty-phone-holder, but I'll have to wait on that.

Have you found any issues with memory? I'm trying to decide whether I should drop $100 on doubling the memory when I buy my MBA.

Go with the 4GB Ram option, it will serve you longer and better.
