I am debating the purchase of a Mac Pro. I will buy three drives in addtion to the stock 1 TB. Furthermore, I like to take pictures with my point and shoot. Curently, I have around 10-12 GB of photos and less than one GB of videos. The plan is to buy an entry level dslr later this year, which leads to my question.
How large of a hard drive should I buy? Will 500-750 GB suffice? I will SHARE the hard drive with other saved data too. Is this a problem?
I know this question is subjective, but bare with me! I figure filling up a 320 GB drive than buying another drive will get old fast. Of course, assuming I take that many photos. Maybe the 320 is a good option? Nonetheless, all suggestions are appreciated.

I don't recall off the top of my head whether it's in /var/log/kernel.log or /var/log/system.log, but when the system boots back up, it provides a previous shutdown cause as an integer, and that integer can be used to point you in the right direction. There's not actually a list that's publicly available, but I might be able to find what it means for you.

I have an Xbox and a PS2, both on my home network, neither is modded in any way. Is there a way to use either of these puppies to Fold while I am not gaming? With new consoles around the corner (well, in the next year or so), I am less concerned about running the current ones into the ground. It'd be cool if they could at least be put to some use.

Hi everyone,
I have Logic Express on my Macbook Pro but now I need a keyboard/speakers etc to be able to use it. I have no idea what to get - to be honest I want the cheapest possible just to get started as money is tight at the moment.
I'm a keyboard player so eventually I'd like a keyboard with weighted keys but it doesn't have to be to start with.
So: what keyboard? speakers? anything else?
You are a keyboard player and you don't already own a keyboard??? Use what you have. You of course need to connect your K/B's MIDI to the mac but just et the correct cable
The cheapest speakers would be those little earbuds that cam "free" with your ipod or your computer's built-in speakers.

Anyone have any idea what it is looking like for tomorrow morning?
I've tried calling at least five times in the last hour and they won't answer the phone. What time are you going to line up tomorrow?

There is not a viable read (bootable) install of either 10.4 or 10.5 on the primary hard drive. So you have a few options. If you want to stick with mac os? You need to either make your way to www.lowendmac.com, or ebay. to get a copy at a price you can afford. Or you might want to look at www.distrowatch.com for some viable alternatives. Granted Linux on the PPC arch is going out of style and fast, but for the time being it could be a fix to get you up and running until you can get a viable boot disk of Tiger or Leopard.

OF course you do - need to repurchase. Do you really expect Apple to give away higher resolution content to those that already have the 320x versions?
If so, you need a reality check. Really.
You have posed a question and not provided an answer, merely a remark questioning my understanding of reality.
I provided a response to a member's question - do you need to repurchase? The answer is, for me at least, yes. I suggested, perhaps too forcefully, that I did not appreciate this requirement.
This is a very 'real' issue. If broadband uptake and speeds continue to rise, and consumer acceptance of digital media increases, than higher quality content will be more readily demanded and easier to supply. However, if quality enhancements are too quick, and a consumer must repurchase his or her entire collection (or favourite parts of) too regularly than disatisfaction is felt. It is felt in the frustration of having to spend more time and money re-downloading something that a consumer perceives he or she already owns.
How can Apple avoid this. One is communication of value. The problem with this approach is that it is very subjective - a consumer could heavily discount the quality enhancement when compared to the additional time and money spent. In other words, a consumer values his or her time and money more than the quality. Another is discounting; that is, offering discounts to those customers who already own the pre iTunes 7.0 versions. This is still subjective, but offers a consumer something tangible (dollars saved).

MacTelChat has found hidden references in iPhoto 6.0.5 (http://www.mactelchat.com/articles/237-iphoto-6-0-5-shows-evidence.html) that show Apple is preparing iPhoto for integration with Google Maps. It appears as though a hidden button in the interface would allow hidden GPS attributes about a photo to link with Google Maps and show where in the world a picture was taken.
This news comes as AppleInsider revisits a patent application (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2103) discovered in September by MacNN (http://www.macnn.com/blogs/?p=98) for a "multi-functional handheld device." According to the patent, the device could contain a multitude of hardware features, including:
- Microphone
- Force Sensing
- Camera
- GPS
- Cellular radio
AppleInsider also notes that Apple may be behind a survey conducted in the spring, which asked users to "rate their preference of form factor designs for a next-generation Internet handheld device."

This is in line with the iPhone life cycle.
2007 - iPhone (the Apple Beta)
2008 - iPhone 3G - Complete Redesign (or, IMHO, the "real" launch)
2009 - iPhone 3GS - Modest update
2010 - iPhone 4 - Complete redesign
2011 - iPhone 4.5 - Modest update
2012 - iPhone 5 - Complete redesign. (or at least, significant overhaul.)
iPad, iPod Touch & iPod Nano follow this curve. I feel like we can expect a revolutionary new device every 2 years, and a modest upgrade in between.

A very nice fake. Unfortunately, you'd have to change the CPU type from ARM7 to ARM6 on all the binary files then write the proper driver kext for the GPU.

This is interesting - can anyone confirm that the website didn't do this before?
You really think that they would use a .org domain for a phone? If Apple follows through with a phone, I would be extremely surprised to see any domains used besides Apple.com or iTunes.com

sometimes apple is really good at advertising the same things the previous product already had but they make it sound like its a new feature..
What they advertise is "Now a richer Multi-Touch experience comes to the Mac", and that's indeed true as there are a lot of new gestures.

Another thing about converting AAC to mp3--you're tinkering with a file that's already compressed and you'll lose some sound quality. I got excited about AAC and ripped a few hundred of my CDs. Then I discovered that Tivo won't play AAC (I stream my mp3s from my Mac to the Tivo, which is connected to the home theater). So rather than re-rip all my CDs I converted them to mp3 in iTunes. They sounded pretty crappy. I might just have good ears--I can tell the difference between CD and vinyl--but that was an unacceptable loss of quality. I ended up re-ripping everything.

I think they removed it, but according to Andrew Welch (president of Ambrosia Software), "Everything that was free in the older, free WireTap continues to be free in WireTap Pro. You can use it to your heart's content to record AIFF recordings, and never pay for it." If you use other features, an unregistered message is dubbed over your recordings until you register.
Hey folks! Hex Monkey, could you give a link for this quote? I downloaded wiretap pro, but all the documenatation provided suggests that one can only use it for 30 days for free, regardless of what file type one's using...thanks!
